Sister Anita’s 100TH birthday

“Seventy is the sum of our years, or eighty if we are strong…” Psalm 90:10

On July 21, 2021, Sr. Anita Dagesse celebrated her 100th birthday at St. Joseph Convent in Biddeford, Maine, where she has resided since the sisters in Methuen moved. Almost 2 years ago, Sister Anita and ten other Sisters of the Presentation of Mary moved to their new residence, the Infirmary of the Good Shepherd Sisters, scim. Her quick wit, her love for singing, and the great energy that kept her walking the corridors soon endeared Sister Anita to her new companions who were amazed at her advanced age.

Due to the limitations set in place by the pandemic, her birthday celebration was simple but filled with joy. All in attendance prayed for her intentions at the morning celebration of the Eucharist, followed by a hallway gathering to sing “Happy Birthday,” and an offering of a gift bag filled with surprises. In the afternoon, the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary who reside at the Residence gathered for a birthday collation with Sister Anita’s favorite dessert: a cup of coffee and a donut! Visits were limited, so a basket of beautiful birthday cards from sisters around the Province was presented to her, cards she continues to read and enjoy. She was surrounded by love and joy, and cared for by all.

In the days that followed, as those around her revisited the day, asking her how old she was, Sister Anita took a few moments to think, and she replied with a twinkle in her eye: “I’m too old to remember!” Everyone had a good laugh, indicating again that “the joy of the Lord is her strength!”
