Superior General’s Report
Our day began with Lauds in our language groups followed by breakfast. The Chapter delegates met in the capitular room at 9:00 am. After the opening prayer, Mother Maria dos Anjos gave the report of the Superior General. She began with the Chapter of 2017 reminding us that it “put in our hands a gift full of love and wisdom, our renewed Rule of Life.” She and the General Council members later made trips to every P/R/M to give each sister her own copy.
She recapped the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on our world, referencing Pope Francis’ prayer standing all alone in Vatican Square. In addition, she referred to the suffering of our sisters and all of God’s people. She went on to say “the coronavirus also opened up new spaces of communication that have become very important and useful for us, even indispensable.”
Mother Maria dos Anjos spoke about our year of thanksgiving, celebrating 225 years as a Congregation. Novenas, prayers, and gatherings expressed our gratitude in every country where our Sisters are present. A compassion fund was created for the P/M/R to extend our thanksgiving to the Lord.
This topic was followed by several charts of current statistics showing the reality of the Congregation today. The Council of Congregation, Youth/Vocation Ministry, CLPM, MRA, and Inter-Provincial Meetings all took place on Zoom. The 2017 General Chapter proposed the forming of international novitiates and we heard how this was carried out. The year of Fraternal Communion was the next subject of her report followed by the memorable year of Mother Rivier’s Canonization. After touching on several other topics Mother finished her report with a list of challenges, hopes, and visions for the future.
In the afternoon, we heard from some of the General Councilors who reported on the following: MRA, CLPM, Youth/Vocation Ministry, and the Congregational Website. These reports gave a good overview of these ministries for the past six years.
The day included a great deal of listening, integration, and sharing. After the reports were given the Sisters had the opportunity to express their gratitude to Mother Maria dos Anjos and her Council for what was shared and accomplished in the last six years. Our Good and Gracious God has blessed us in countless ways through the intercession of Mary, our Mother.
Vespers combined with Mass was prepared by the Sisters from Spain. This was followed by supper after which the Sisters retired for the evening.
