KUNKUJANG MARIAMA, MOVING ON!

Kunkujang Mariama is located in the southern part of The Gambia.  It is a Marian sanctuary where, every year during Lent and on the first Saturday in December, the Diocese makes two national pilgrimages. It was in September 2009, that the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary opened a new community in Kunkujang Mariama.  Sr. Sarian Juliana Gomez and the late Sr. Catherine Gibba were the first Sisters assigned in this mission. Today, there are 5 sisters and two pre-postulants in this community to continue the work of our Blessed Foundress, Marie Rivier.  The sisters have an active role in the ministry of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Kunkujang Mariama.

St. Francis of Assisi Parish is a faith community with twenty-two outstations.  Every Sunday and on major feast days, the sisters animate communion services in one or two of these Christian Communities. At these grace-filled celebrations, the Word of God is proclaimed and shared in the native languages of the faithful and they share in Holy Communion. The sisters also lead the Stations of the Cross on the Fridays of Lent.

Teaching is a passion for the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary. In Kunkujang Mariama, the Sisters teach in the Primary and Senior Secondary schools. They prepare the children for the Sacraments of Initiation: Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation, a service of love which gives joy to the community.

Visiting the sick and elderly of the parish is the service the Sisters look forward to with joy every week.  This encounter with the families brings joy, peace and offers solidarity to the poor of Christ. It is a grace-filled moment for the sick and elderly of the parish.

Working with the Missionary Childhood, the youth, the Associates of Blessed Anne Marie Rivier and with the children of the Oratory at the Don Bosco Youth Center, is a grace and a thanksgiving.  We thank God for the good collaborative spirit that exists between the Presentation of Mary Sisters, the Salesian priests of Don Bosco, the Catechists and the entire pastoral team.

We give God all the glory.
