INTERCULTURALITY
WE ARE ONE!
During the afternoon of June 21, 2022, the Sisters of the Presentation of Mary, Philippine Province gathered together to celebrate interculturality with the five Vietnamese Postulants. The celebration focused on the theme, “We Are One” one of Saint Marie Rivier great desires for her daughters.
The occasion to celebrate interculturality between the Filipino Sisters and the Vietnamese young women is the beginning of the formation of the heart, opening oneself to a fruitful interaction, respect and acceptance of diverse cultures.

It is worth recalling where this grace of interculturality stems from. It was on June 5, 2019 when two sisters from the Philippine Province set foot in the country of the Vietnam to open a community in order to welcome Vietnamese women who desire to participate in the mission of Jesus Christ by becoming a religious among us. This new Foundation was a daring “YES” of the Congregation through the leadership of the Superior General Mother Maria dos Anjos Alves and her Council who wanted to continue spreading the love of God and making Jesus Christ known and loved. This project was in partnership with the mission of Japan and with the spiritual support of all the Provinces, Regions, and Missions.

The Sisters of the Philippine Province rejoiced as they welcome the four women from Vietnam who responded to God’s invitation to live a time of initial formation to Religious Life in the Philippines. The program began with a prayer that expressed the richness of the Filipinos’ and Vietnamese’ piety. It was followed by the singing of the
Philippine and Vietnam National Anthems. A splendid opening show performed by the Filipino and Vietnamese formands showing how diverse the two cultures are but enriched by the beauty of each one. Afterwards, cultural dances were performed by the different communities and Vietnamese formands, folk songs were sung, games were played, different characteristics and traits were dramatized and varied food and delicacies were introduced and served during the fellowship meal.
Indeed, each one felt the oneness and a sense of belonging -the family spirit that marks the heart of every Sister of the Presentation of Mary. It is said that when people with different cultures come together, they create a new culture –where each culture is contributing to the formation of the whole. (Source: from the Interview with Sister Patricia Murray ibvm, Executive Secretary of the UISG) Being enriched with one another’s culture was the most important aim of this gathering. It was not about whose culture is dominant, it was about finding a home or being at home with one another where each person can express who she is, what she feels and what she thinks. This is what Saint Marie Rivier dreamt for our communities regardless of our nationality, color, race, and culture –WE ARE ONE!
